NAYANTARA PALCHOUDHURI
DISTRICT GOVERNOR DG-2008-09 Born into a Rotary family, Nayantara Palchoudhuri graduated with a first class first from the department of International Relations, Jadavpur University. She was a University Gold Medallist and a National Scholar. She proceeded to do her MA in Area Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and followed it up with a research degree (M Phil) from the London School of Economics and Political Science where she was awarded the prestigious Metcalfe Scholarship. Nayantara is the grand daughter of late lla Palchoudhuri, one of the early lady parliamentarians (Lok Sabha). Her father, late Amitava Palchoudhuri, was a Rotarian for 48 years and a past president of Rotary Club of Calcutta. Her mother, Chitra is past president of the Inner Wheel of Calcutta. Her sister Sreoshi is currently a member of Rotary Club of Calcutta. Nayantara is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and her family members are all Paul Harris Fellows. She is actively involved with her family business of growing and manufacturing tea in North Bengal and is the fourth generation associated with the business. Nayantara is the immediate past president of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industries (BNCCI) and was the first lady president of this 119 year old institution. She is vice-chairman of Enterprise Development Institute. Nayantara represents various committees in the Indian Tea Association and is Governing Council member of the Tea Research Association. Currently, she is Director, West Bengal Tea Development Corporation Ltd.; Honorary Treasurer, Indo-British Scholars' Association and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme; Executive Committee member, Ladies Study Group; Associate Member, Friends of Victoria Memorial; Alumni Leader, London School of Economics and Political Science; and governing body member of the Brahmo Sammilan Samaj. Nayantara joined Rotary Club of Calcutta Inner City as charter member in 1991 and served as president in 2000-2001. Her participation in numerous programmes at district and international levels has been widely acclaimed by Rotary International leaders. She was awarded as Best Secretary, Outstanding President and won the Outstanding Club prize as president. Nayantara was GSE coordinator in 1993 94, Assistant District Secretary in 1995 96 and 1999 2000, Special Aide to Governor in 1998 99 and 2005 06, Assistant Governor in 2002 03, 2003 04, 2004 05 and District Chairman (Publications) in 2002 03, She was actively involved in the Rotary Peace Conference in Kathmandu in 1995 96, Arsenic Peace Conference in Kolkata in 1999 and Rotary Institutes held in Kolkata in 1998 and 2004. She is also life member of The 4 Way Test Association of India. Nayantara is widely travelled and has been part of important government and business delegations abroad. She recently accompanied the chief minister of West Bengal to South East Asia. She is the only person from India who has been selected by the US Government to visit USA in July 2007 for a special programme -the International Visitor's Leadership Programme 2007. Recently, she was awarded the Banga Seva Samman & Nari Samrnan awards. An avid music lover who holds a diploma in pianoforte from the Royal School of Music, London, Nayantara, who is single, is a member of leading social clubs in Kolkata. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and listening to classical music. |
